Richard Spinelli is responsible for Eastern Region investment activities including credit, structuring, closing oversight and asset management of transactions. In his role, Mr. Spinelli works with origination relationships and channels to prescreen, structure and execute on new investments. Mr. Spinelli is responsible for monitoring asset performance while helping with risk assessment. Mr. Spinelli is the Trawler Risk Management and Chief Compliance Officer and is a member of the Investment and Valuation Committees.

Mr. Spinelli’s career spans 25 years and includes serving as a Partner and Head of Debt Asset Management at Starwood Capital Group where he was responsible for managing the debt investments of Starwood’s private equity funds and publicly traded REIT. His role included formulating and executing business plans related to distressed debt investments which were converted to equity investments that he subsequently managed. Prior to joining Starwood, Mr. Spinelli was a Managing Director and Head of Asset Management at Natixis Real Estate Capital overseeing a $3 billion portfolio of senior, mezzanine and preferred equity investments secured by all asset classes of commercial real estate. Mr. Spinelli previously was Head of Asset Management at Capmark Finance (f/k/a GMAC Commercial Mortgage) where he was responsible for a $2.5 billion portfolio of commercial mortgage loans comprised of senior and mezzanine debt. Earlier in his career, Mr. Spinelli was a Vice President at Nomura Asset Capital Corp. where he worked closely with Mr. Scavone.

 

Mr. Spinelli holds a J.D. degree from Hofstra University School of Law, where he graduated third in his class with Highest Honors and went on to practice real estate law at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in NYC. He earned his B.S. in Political Science from Boston College.
